Benefits of Massage, Visceral and Neural Manipulation

The Benefits of Massage Therapy:  Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease and pain is stress-related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. Massage is an effective tool for managing this stress, which translates into:

  • Decreased anxiety.
  • Enhanced sleep quality.
  • Greater energy.
  • Improved concentration.
  • Increased circulation.
  • Reduced fatigue.
  • Enhanced immune response

Massage can also help specifically address a number of health issues. Bodywork can:

  • Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
  • Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
  • Ease medication dependence.
  • Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body's natural defense system.
  • Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
  • Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
  • Improve the condition of the body's largest organ—the skin.
  • Increase joint flexibility.
  • Lessen depression and anxiety.
  • Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
  • Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
  • Reduce post surgery adhesions and swelling.
  • Reduce spasms and cramping.
  • Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
  • Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body's natural painkiller.
  • Relieve migraine pain.

The Benefits of Visceral and Neural Manipulation:

It is estimated that 80-90% of neuromuscular pain and dysfunction has its origins in the viscera- the organs that inhabit your thorax, abdomen and pelvis.  All  the forms of your connective tissue- ligaments, tendons and  fascia- are part of a continuous three dimensional web in your body. Collectively these tissues maintain spatial relationships among everything else in the body through their tensegrity .Because of the continuous nature of these tissues, no distortion from trauma can stay local, and any intervention, such as surgery, changes things all along the web.

Thus, trauma to the stomach or the connective tissues around the lung can create neck pain that won't go away with massage.  Dysfunction of the liver can create acne, asthma, sciatica, incontinence, or pain in the right shoulder, simply because of these lines of lesion- like a snag in a sweater spreading across the whole fabric of the sweater. Impingement of the brachial plexus nerve in the neck can cause pain and decreased sensation in the shoulder and arm.

Visceral Manipulation (VM) was developed by French Osteopath, Jean-Pierre Barral, named one of Time Magazine's Top Six Innovators for Alternative Medicine. Neural Manipulation (NM) was developed by French Osteopath Alain Croibier in collaboration with Jean-Pierre Barral.
